Dodging Tip, Life Lesson
January 17, 2007
I coached a lacrosse clinic and during the dodging segment one of the coaches, Kevin, taught an idea I quite like. Look at where you want to go. Don’t look at the defender, don’t look at the ground. In my private lessons I’ve modified this to “focus” on where you want to go – the slight difference being you don’t want to give away your dodge by staring at your target. You can look your defenseman in the eyes by still be focusing your mind, and your peripheral vision, on where you’re going.
The concept may sound stupid it’s so simple, but look at how many lacrosse players don’t apply it. If you’re a lacrosse coach, especially of youth players, notice how many run looking at the ground. If you’re a lacrosse player, be conscious of your own focus.
Kevin’s lesson for dodging in lacrosse is great advice for any goal you have in life. Don’t focus on where you are now (the ground), don’t focus on your obstacles (the defender in front of you). Focus on where you want to be and you will get there. Try it out.
Cheers,
